Preparing for Healing: A Brief Guide to Starting Therapy

Starting your healing journey by starting therapy is one most important steps that you will ever take. It can also be one of the most difficult ones. It takes a lot of courage, acceptance, and self-reflection. If you are reading this article, it means that you are strongly considering and/or are now ready to take that important step. I decided to write this article inspired by the brave stories of my patients, their struggles finding services, and understanding the therapeutic process. Here’s a brief guide to help you prepare:

1. Reflect on Your Needs: Take some time to understand your reasons for seeking therapy. Reflect on whether you are looking for someone to help you with trauma related challenges, interpersonal relationships, anxiety, depression, etc. Identifying your goals and challenges will guide your choices. This will help you to ensure that you find the right therapies.

2. Explore Therapy Types: Learn about different therapy approaches, from talk therapy (psychodynamic therapy) to CBT or EMDR. Explore the one that resonates with you and speak to your therapist about their training and different treatment modalities.

3. In-Person vs. Online: Consider whether you prefer in-person or online therapy. Think about what suits your comfort and accessibility. Some insurance companies may have different co-payments based on whether you are seeing your therapist online or in-person.

4. Insurance and Costs: Understand your insurance coverage. Contact your provider to clarify deductibles, copayments, and in-network therapists. Make sure that your therapist is in-network. Sometimes the insurance may provide you out-dated lists of providers. Create a budget if possible to avoid financial stressors in the future.

5. Research Therapists: This may be one of the most important steps. Seek recommendations from trusted sources, check credentials, and read reviews. Request a consultation before starting services if possible. This will allow you to meet the therapist before starting services and ask questions that you may have in regards to the process. Your therapeutic relationship with your therapist is crucial. Make sure that they are able to help you feel safe and comfortable.

6. Set Realistic Expectations: Remember that “Healing is not linear.” Healing takes time, so please be patient with yourself. Think about your big therapeutic goals and don’t forget to acknowledge all the small steps that you are taking in order to get there. Focus on your progress and victories. Make sure that you are communicating with your therapist about your needs and worries. Remember that she is there to support you and empower you to become the best version of yourself.

Remember, taking this step towards therapy is a testament to your strength and commitment to becoming the best version of yourself. Your healing journey is a path to growth and transformation, and you’re not alone in this process. Feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions in regards to this process.
